The 72 hour course
The Permaculture Design course is for anyone interested in gaining the skills and perspectives for sustainable living and productivity. If you study with us, you will build your knowledge of all the necessary aspects and gain a thorough grounding in the skill of Permaculture Design.
The course is based around creative thinking and learning from natural systems. We take a “holistic” approach, recognising the importance of the connections between things and not just the things themselves. We will look at topics that could improve your quality of life and your neighbourhood:
* how to get healthy food from non-destructive sources
* saving money and energy use in the home
* how to use water wisely water and make it work for us
* building and construction to create a sustainable future
* how to work together effectively - people, money, organisation
We will explore the methods and tools that permaculture designers use to make sense of challenging and confusing situations. We aim to study in a relaxed and reflective way and, at the end of the course, you will be able to carry out your first piece of Permaculture design work.
The total time spent studying together is 72 hours, the equivalent of two weeks' intensive study. However, we can study over much longer periods of time. In this case, in between meetings, some additional time can be spent on background reading, site visits and practical work.
Courses are led by Angus Soutar who has 20 years' experience of practising and teaching permaculture. Angus also accredits the permaculture diploma on behalf of the Permaculture Institute of North Britain.
A certificate will be given to those who successfully complete the course. This is the foundation course for the internationally-recognised permaculture diploma. The 72 hour course completes the “theory” part of the diploma and, as a successful student, you can carry on towards the diploma, which will be based on your own work, your projects and your lifestyle.
Permaculture education is a grass-roots activity that uses the skills of permaculture design to devise courses that are accessible and fun. The course is taught in most of the countries round the world.
