How to make maps without using electricity - batteries not needed!

"Barefoot surveying" involves gathering information on a piece of land without the need for expensive instruments and formal training. Our map-making sessions show you how to create hand-drawn maps, and include the use of simple, traditional drawing instruments.

Venue

Greave House Farm is situated in open farmland above the town of Stocksbridge, about 12 miles northwest of Sheffield, deep in the Pennine Hills. The Farm's owners wish to create a welcoming, inclusive and therapeutic environment where people can get involved in various activities - animal care, gardening, and also in training courses, such as environmental education - all in a supportive, caring atmosphere. What will we do?

• gain practical experience of making base maps and site plans on a working site

• learn how to use simple methods and instruments such as ‘A’ frames, water levels, pacing and compass work to determine distances, angles and contours for base-mapping.

• evaluate the accuracy for the methods used, and judge how accurate they actually need to be for the purposes required

• gain a basic knowledge of technical drawing, including standard techniques such as plan views and elevations

Who should be there?

• anyone interested in learning about land-based design using cost-effective and appropriate technologies.

• those who want to learn the rudiments of basic surveying and map-making in order to be able to create the base maps needed to make accurate planting plans, or as an aid to more complex design work.

• people interested in Transition Towns, Permaculture and other modern approaches to a “low carbon” future, and who want some idea of what that means in practice

• graduates of the permaculture design course who want to work on their design portfolios – this includes those considering the diploma or those already on their diploma pathway

• those who are considering going on a permaculture design course and who want to know more before they start

  
  

The weekend is a great opportunity for people who are interested in getting to know a wider network of like-minded people in the Northcountry, including those who are interested in experiencing the workings of a family-run care farm in its initial stages

Cost, Accommodation and Food

We are asking for £50 per participant in order to make this weekend happen, but would be willing to discuss this fee where appropriate.

It would be great if people could bring food to share for lunch on Saturday and Sunday.

In addition, there will be an optional overnight stay on-site on the Saturday night. For an additional £10 per person, a Saturday evening meal and Sunday breakfast will be provided.

Overnight accommodation options are:

• basic camping at £2.50 per person

• a place in the four-berth caravan at £5, on a first-come-first-served basis

• self-organised B&B locally
  

There are basic washing facilities and a compost toilet on site.
